Photographs - Barnum Museum

The Photographs sub-collection contains an array of formats that track the development of photography itself. These include daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes (ferrotypes), cartes de visite, cabinet cards, stereoviews or stereograph cards, large format albumen prints, a poster composed of applied photographs, and “real photo” postcards. Subjects of the images include portraits of P.T. Barnum, his family members, and his associates, as well as images of P.T. Barnum's homes, Lindencroft, Waldemere, and Marina, with many interior views of the latter two homes. The back sides of the Waldemere series include descriptions of the rooms hand-written by Nancy Fish, Barnum's second wife. There are numerous photographs of Charles S. Stratton (Gen. Tom Thumb) as well as images of his wife, M. Lavinia Warren, her sister huldah "Minnie" Warren, and George Washington Morrison Nutt (Commodore Nutt).
