Journalist Herbert J. Stoeckel wrote two series of features for the Hartford Courant, "Then and Now," and "Tales of Old Hartford." Stoeckel illustrated these series with photographs that provided comparisons between past and present Hartford, highlighting changes in the city from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. After his death in 1967, Stoeckel's papers became part of the Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library collections.
