Robin Romano documented families in Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and California across 84 days of production. Romano's initial proposals referenced Edward R. Murrow's Harvest of Shame, a television documentary first airing in 1960 on CBS about migrant labor conditions in the United States.
