Description
First run with new power -- Amtrak's Super Chief/El Capitan rolls west with new EMD SDP diesel-electric engines in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first run of Amtrak's Super Chief-El Capitan train using Amtrak's brand new Electro-Motive Division (EMD) SDP40F locomotives. The photo shows the train heading west. The photographer was standing next to the control tower in Corwith Yard, located in the southwestern section of Chicago in the neighborhood of Brighton Park. Corwith Yard was a major freight classification yard complete with control tower for the Santa Fe Railroad. The Super Chief was Santa Fe's all Pullman sleeping car train that operated between Chicago and Los Angeles. The El Capitan was Santa Fe's all coach train that operated between the same two cities.
