Peer assessment of children is an area cf research not yet seriously reviewed. A comprehensive search uncovered approximately 70 studies of children employing peer ratings -- with historical roots in the 1920's and growing impetus tcday. Two studies were conducted tc further develop and validate the Peer Description Form (PDF) — a method of peer assessment for rating the behavior of elementary and middle school children. The first study, conducted with 44 male and female fifth- graders, focused on the selection of items — four for each cf nine scales (Hostility, Attention-Seeking, Low Task Orientation, Discipline, Honesty, Friendliness, Extroversion, Withdrawal, and Depression). The second study was conducted on 99 male and female sixth-graders as well as on 57 eighth-graders who were alsc tested three years previously. Each child was rated cn the PDF by ten peers, three teachers, and him or herself. Other data was collected frcm a wide variety of sources (teachers, self, psychclcgist, nurse, archives) on a larce number of variables (academic, discipline, family, emotional adjustment, and social). Analyses showed: (1) moderate tc high internal consistency, interrater reliability, and test retest reliability for each scale, (2) considerable concurrent validity evidenced in the significant correlations between each of the peer scales and both the corresponding teacher scale and a variety cf ccncurrent criteria, (3) considerable predictive validity evidenced in the many predicted correlations betweeen the seven peer scales administered in fifth-grade and predictive criteria in eighth-grade, (4) a replicable factcrial composition across sex and ace, and (5) effects cf sex and age consistent with the literature. The discussion includes a critical appraisal of the PDF, suggestions for its revision, an exploration of the utility of the PDF in both clinical and research contexts, a discussion of ethical considerations in peer assessment, and suggestions for future research
