Description
Over 500,000 children weave the South Asian carpets that are purchased for American homes and offices. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the use of child labor in the carpet industry is widely documented in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Children work in confined, dimly lit workshops, and many develop respiratory illnesses, spinal deformities, and suffer injuries from sharp tools. Many children, particularly in India, are tricked into such work, bonded to pay off family loans, or kidnapped and held far from their families by force and fear.
