Description
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers play a vital role in the future of renewable energy generation and storage through the production of hydrogen gas. As clean and sustainable energy sources become increasingly important, PEM water electrolyzers have gained significant attention for their potential to deliver storable hydrogen as a versatile energy carrier. However, the performance and durability of PEM water electrolyzers heavily rely on the continued operating capabilities of the porous transport layers (PTLs) in the pursuit of a cost effective future. This thesis focuses on a comprehensive study of different noble metal coatings with the goal of being applied within the bulk volume of titanium based PTLs, aiming to overcome the existing challenges and improve the performance and stability of PEM water electrolyzers. The objectives of this research are to explore and develop coatings that decrease contact resistance, demonstrate high corrosion stability, and ensure complete coverage of all titanium surfaces both within and on the surface of the PTL. The advancements in titanium based PTLs are of paramount importance economically and for their potential to enhance the efficiency and lifespan of PEM water electrolyzer systems.
